Are you in search of stunning outdoor locations in Colorado Springs to capture those special moments with your loved ones? Look no further! I'm often asked where the best location for family or senior photos should be, so I've compiled a short list to bring you the top six picture-perfect spots that will transform your senior or family photos into lifelong treasures.
- Helen Hunt Falls: One of my absolute favorite places, nestled in North Cheyenne Cañon Park, Helen Hunt Falls offers a captivating backdrop with its cascading waterfalls and lush greenery. The sound of rushing water and the scent of pine in the air create a serene atmosphere, perfect for capturing natural, relaxed moments. Helen Hunt Falls is beautiful year round. Photos are best taken in the early morning or close to dusk. As this is a free and public area, it may get a bit crowded.
- Red Rocks Canyon Open Space: This natural wonderland boasts unique red rock formations, trees, ponds, a view of Pikes Peak, and local wildlife, making it an ideal location for dramatic and artistic photos. From towering sandstone cliffs to hidden nooks, Red Rocks Canyon Open Space offers endless possibilities. Beyond a beautiful place for momentous photos, it offers great hiking trails, rock climbing, and a whole history of Colorado Springs.
- Fox Run Park: Embrace the tranquility of Fox Run Park, where picturesque lakes reflect the surrounding wooded landscape. Explore the park's network of trails for a variety of photo opportunities, from enchanting forests to open fields. While the park is beautiful year round, it is at its peak during the summer months when every thing is green and in bloom, and during the fall, when the aspens are changing their brilliant colors. I love the way the sunset reflects on the ponds creating a majestic background for photos.
- Palmer Park: With sweeping vistas and open meadows, Palmer Park provides a versatile canvas for your photoshoot. Capture the essence of Colorado's natural beauty with the city skyline or Garden of the Gods in the distance. In the heart of the city, Palmer Park is often overlooked as a perfect setting for your family or senior photos, with trails, rocks, and a variety of vegetation as the ideal location.
- Ute Valley Park: Ute Valley Park offers striking rock formations and breathtaking views of the city below. Whether you're looking for a rugged, adventurous backdrop or a serene setting, this park has it all. As you are walking and hiking through the hills, you’ll forget you’re even in the city.
- Bear Creek Nature Center: Get up close and personal with Colorado's diverse wildlife at Bear Creek Nature Center. Set against the backdrop of Bear Creek and surrounded by nature trails, this location allows you to capture the beauty of the outdoors alongside local fauna. This is a much less crowed area located on the west side of Colorado Springs, and absolutely wonderful. One thing to be aware of is that the nature trails are for “foot traffic only” and pets are not allowed
Beyond the fact that all of these places are stunning, they are also free to the public. With that in mind, we must be aware of other visitors. My favorite times to photograph portraits are the early morning when the sun is not so hot and casting harsh shadows, or towards the late afternoon/evening as the sun is beginning to set.
